Enthusiasm

On the 7th of April I visited PMF Zagreb (Faculty of Science) during the Biology night manifestation (https://www.facebook.com/nocbiologije/?ref=py_c).

One of the lecturers held a presentation about the plants grown in test tubes. The seedlings are first cut from the original plant and then put into sterile environment. During the process plants are treated with sterile equipment to prevent occurrence of yeast or the funghi. In the tube there is a nutritious mix made of different sugars and other chemicals that the specific plant might need. After the plant has grown to a certain size it is ready to be acclimated. Acclimatization or acclimatisation (also called acclimation or acclimatation) is the process in which an individual organism adjusts to a change in its environment (such as a change in altitude, temperature, humidity, photoperiod, or pH), allowing it to maintain performance across a range of environmental conditions. The plants are acclimated by first removing the aluminium foil on top of the test tube then removing the cotton pads inserted into the test tube and then taking the plant out of the tube making it ready to be planted. The process of acclimatization takes about 1-2 months depending on the plant, the change in the overall environment and the risk of yeasts.

Btw – Marin managed to grow a seedling of a sequoia tree, which will hopefully grow happily in the countryside, where his family has a (big enough?) garden.
